She completed her graduate studies in the English Literature MA program at the University of Victoria, honing her research, editing, and written communication skills. She also has a BA in English Literature, graduating with Honours and Distinction, along with a Minor in Applied Ethics. During their studies, they developed an array of professional interests such as research-based writing, digital humanities, coding for the web, philosophy, and copyediting.

Aside from professional interests, Sonja is a runner and plays roller derby for the Eves of Destruction. They are a linocut printmaker, a photographer, and an avid journaller. There are bits of all the things they love in what they create.
